Changed name and worked in films
Saroj Khan’s real name is Nirmala Nagpal. His father came to India from Pakistan at the time of partition. In those days the family had to face a lot of hardships. At the age of 3, Saroj acted in her first film Nazrana. Then she was named Baby Shyama. In the late 50s, Saroj Khan started working as a background dancer in films. Later, her father changed her name to Saroj for films.

While talking to Hindustan Times, Saroj Khan had given the reason for this. He had said, ‘My original name was Nirmala. When my father sent me to films, he changed my name to Saroj. So that other family members do not know about his work in films. In those days, working in films was not considered very respectable.

Saroj was only 14 years old when she had a relationship with her own guru. He was about 30 years older than her. She had said in an interview to Rediff in 2012, ‘I was in a relationship with Sohan Lal at the age of 14, at that time he was 43 years old. I had two children Raju Khan and Kukku Khan from her. He refused to give his name to my children, so I married a Pathan and had a child from him.

Gave countless hit songs with Madhuri
Saroj Khan gained recognition as a choreographer in the 1988 film ‘Tezaab’. Many of its songs were iconic, including ‘Ek Do Teen’ among others. This song played a big role in making Madhuri Dixit a star. After that Madhuri and Saroj together gave many hit songs. There are countless songs including ‘Dhak Dhak Karne Laga’, ‘Chane Ke Khet Mein’, ‘Humko Aaj Kal Hai Intezaar’, ‘Choli Ke Peeche’ and ‘Dola Re’. Madhuri was already proficient in dance but being with Saroj Khan further enhanced her dance.

Saroj Khan died on 17 June 2020 in Mumbai. She was 71 years old and was suffering from respiratory diseases.
